Standard GOST 8295-73
Graphite of lubricants

The description of the standard

Standard GOST 8295-73
Graphite of lubricants. Specifications

(in Russian – ГОСТ 8295-73 Графит смазочный. Технические условия).

This standard applies to crystalline graphite obtained by separate or joint enrichment of natural ores, graphite-containing waste from metallurgical industries and the production of silicon carbide, intended for the manufacture of graphite preparations and pastes used as lubricants, electrically conductive coatings, as well as in the manufacture of electrically conductive rubber, products for special purposes and in powder metallurgy.

Graphite is produced in the following grades GS-1, GS-2, GS-3, GS-4 and P in accordance with GOST 17022-81:

Graphite GS-1 (ГС-1)

Ash content, %, not more than = 0,5
The release of volatile substances, %, not more than = 0,5
Moisture content, %, not more than = 0,5
Sulphur content (S), %, not more than = not standardized
The concentration of hydrogen ions in the water extract, pH = 6,0 – 8,2
The residue on the sieve, %, not more than:
– No. 02 = not standardized
– No. 016 = not standardized
– No. 0063 = not standardized
The particles with an equivalent sphere diameter of more than 6 µm, %, not more than = 40
Carbon content (C), %, not less than = not standardized

Graphite GS-2 (ГС-2)

Ash content, %, not more than = 1,0
The release of volatile substances, %, not more than = not standardized
Moisture content, %, not more than = 0,5
Sulphur content (S), %, not more than = not standardized
The concentration of hydrogen ions in the water extract, pH = 6,0 – 8,2
The residue on the sieve, %, not more than:
– No. 02 = not standardized
– No. 016 = not standardized
– No. 0063 = 1,0
The particles with an equivalent sphere diameter of more than 6 µm, %, not more than = not standardized
Carbon content (C), %, not less than = not standardized

Graphite GS-3 (ГС-3)

Ash content, %, not more than = 2,0
The release of volatile substances, %, not more than = not standardized
Moisture content, %, not more than = 0,5
Sulphur content (S), %, not more than = not standardized
The concentration of hydrogen ions in the water extract, pH = 6,0 – 8,2
The residue on the sieve, %, not more than:
– No. 02 = not standardized
– No. 016 = not standardized
– No. 0063 = 1,0
The particles with an equivalent sphere diameter of more than 6 µm, %, not more than = not standardized
Carbon content (C), %, not less than = not standardized

Graphite GS-4 (ГС-4)

Ash content, %, not more than = 5
The release of volatile substances, %, not more than = not standardized
Moisture content, %, not more than = 1,0
Sulphur content (S), %, not more than = not standardized
The concentration of hydrogen ions in the water extract, pH = 6,0 – 8,2
The residue on the sieve, %, not more than:
– No. 02 = 0,1
– No. 016 = 1,2
– No. 0063 = not standardized
The particles with an equivalent sphere diameter of more than 6 µm, %, not more than = not standardized
Carbon content (C), %, not less than = not standardized

Graphite P (П)

Ash content, %, not more than = 7,0
The release of volatile substances, %, not more than = 1,0
Moisture content, %, not more than = 1,0
Sulphur content (S), %, not more than = 0,2
The concentration of hydrogen ions in the water extract, pH = 6,0 – 8,2
The residue on the sieve, %, not more than:
– No. 02 = 0,1
– No. 016 = 1,5
– No. 0063 = not standardized
The particles with an equivalent sphere diameter of more than 6 µm, %, not more than = not standardized
Carbon content (C), %, not less than = 91

The Carbon content (C) is determined by calculation as the difference between 100% and the sum of the Ash content, the Volatile substances and the Moisture content.

At the request of the consumer, the residue on the sieve No. 0063 for grade P graphite must be at least 55 %.
